Amir Muqam

Amir Muqam born Puran, Shangla District, July 25, 1963) is a Pakistani politician and has remained Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan (MNA) twice in his political career. He was elected as MNA for the first time in general elections of 2002 in Pervez Musharraf era on Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) coalition seat. He was member of the Jamaat-e-Islami party at that time. Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal was the then major opposition party to the pro-Musharraf government of Pakistan Muslim League (Q). Amir Muqam soon changed his loyalties and joined the ruling party.

He justified his act by saying that he wanted to deliver to and improve the social conditions of his constituency that was not possible being part of the opposition. While being part of the federal government, he remained Minister of State for Water and Power and Federal Minister for Political Affairs. In that duration, he managed to get some funds from the federal government for the development of his constituency Shangla which has the second lowest Human Development Index in the country. He primarily gave attention to electrification, provision of telephone network and construction and improvement of roads within Shangla District. Changing his loyalties, however, made him controversial amongst his voters.

He was supposed to be very close to the then President of Pakistan and founder of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Parvez Musharraf and in spite of being inexperienced in the national politics, he was made provincial president of the party for the province now called Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. He was re-elected as MNA in general elections of 2008.  He held the title of provincial president till end of March 2012 when provincial organization of the party was dissolved by the party president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. On the very next day of his dismissal as provincial chief of the party, he had a meeting with Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, president of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), and announced to join his party. He was soon appointed Senior vice President of the party, a position vacated by Javed Hashmi who quit PML-N and joined Imran Khan's Tehrik-e-Insaf a few months back.

Amir Muqam holds Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar.
